NORMAL, Ill. — A series of game clock and scoreboard errors occurred in the final seconds of Unity’s 39-37 loss to Annawan in Saturday’s Class 1A state championship game.
Annawan junior forward Jayde VanHyfte missed a free throw with 12.3 seconds remaining, but she grabbed the offensive rebound and went in for a layup that would have put the Bravettes ahead 41-37. VanHyfte, however, was whistled for a travel, and the basket was waved off.
The game clock, however, continued to run after the whistle was blown. Video of the sequence taken courtside shows that the whistle blown by official John Dearing sounded with around 11.2 to 11.4 seconds to play, but the clock didn’t stop until 8.6 seconds were remaining.
Also, the scoreboard inside Redbird Arena continued to show Annawan leading 41-37 when Unity was inbounding…
