ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP — As a sophomore at Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta, Kristen Smith still has time to dream about an eventual career.
On Thursday, she added aerospace engineer to her growing list during a visit to Picatinny Arsenal for its annual “Introduce a Girl to Engineering.”
She said that after talking with Tony Farina, a senior aeronautical engineer who was manning one of the many booths set up to explain some of what goes on at the arsenal, which serves all branches of the U.S. military.
“I understand what it is now,” she said of aeronautics.
Using a small balsa “glider,” Farina had demonstrated the basics of air flow around an aircraft before moving off to other fields covered under the umbrella of aeronautics.
