PORTLAND — “You can put this in,” said Sweet Home wrestling coach Steve Thorpe on Friday night, punching a hole in the air with a stiff index finger, “Four-A, from top to bottom, is the toughest division of them all.”

Thorpe didn’t sound like a guy whose team put on a splendid first-day performance to take a solid lead in the Class 4A state wrestling championships at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. He couldn’t afford to.
